Summertime: Mom Update

Biking and Swimming: Got a matching helmet recently to go with my bike. Then I realized I needed some more adjustment on the fit of my bike, so back to the bike shop again. I had to reach too far, so one of the bike shop employees put a shorter stem on the handle bars, so now I can reach them more comfortably. Also had him adjust the tension on the pedals so I can get in and out of them better. Now just need some cooler weather and time to go for a ride!

The stem--that straight part that the handlebars are mounted on--comes in different lengths. The one that came on my bike (see photo) was too long. The shorter one is much nicer.

My beautiful new helmet. (I'm giving my old one to Rosanna or Caroline.)

I've been enjoying swimming three times a week so far this month in the local high school pools. What I want to do, though, is start swimming in a lake, and so I ordered a wetsuit earlier this month. The Puget Sound Blood Center is putting on a 2.25 mile swim next month across Lake Washington...essentially from Bellevue to Seattle. Since I'm not going to be running or really in shape on my bike, a straight swimming event would be ideal (maybe!). This 11th year swim is an annual fundraiser for the Blood Center (Larry donates blood to it faithfully; me, when I can.) Swimmers don't have to raise any money, just pay the $35 fee, but they can ask for sponsors to raise even more money. The thing is, I'll have to wait and see how my swimming goes. Also, it's a long drive to the Bellevue city park where the start is, and check-in begins at 6:45 a.m. This is on a Wednesday morning, so there would be commuter traffic to deal with, 'though I might be used to getting up early as it is after convention (Milltown #1), and we usually get up in time to make it to 7 a.m. breakfast. (Although I usually don't drive anywhere that early in the morning, and I tend to be one that finds it hard to stay awake to drive if I'm drowsy.)

This is the wetsuit that I ordered from JoesSports (online). Now I need someone to watch me so I can go swim in the lake and see what it's like with no walls, no turning around every 25 yards, no lane markings, nothing but water (hopefully)!

Shirley - wow you are ambitious. I think you should do it. What a good experience. Love the helmet. I really need to get one too. Oh, and by the way, sounds like I will see you at Milltown I ;-)
